After the bust we experienced the weekend before, we were a bit apprehensive about driving all the way to south-central Iowa for a questionable setup. We decided to go for it anyway though, since there was at least a slight chance for some tornadoes out in southern Iowa.
Already a tornado watch was issued around noon for about the western half of Iowa. As we headed west out of Ottumwa some towers were already going up to our west.
We stopped at a few different locations east of Chariton Iowa and took some pictures of the building cumulonimbus towers.
We positioned ourselves just east of Chariton and watched as a severe warned storm approached from the southwest.
The arc of storms lifting through southern Iowa wasted no time in organizing into a line. This was quickly reducing the chances for any tornadic activity. We kept watching though as we were still hopeful for something to organize some rotation before the line became completely solid.
A small lowering formed on the leading edge of the now fully mature squall line. There was no rotation from this but it was at least slightly interesting. At this point though we were more concerned with the heavy rain coming at us pretty quickly from the southwest.
We watched the above for a bit, and then decided to head east quickly as the heavy rain was about on top of us. The squall line chased us all the way home. We kept watching for any signs of anything discrete popping out ahead of the line, but it never happened. The day ended up being another bust, but we were happy to at least see some decent convection after the near "blue sky" bust we had the week before. In the end not a single tornado was confirmed in Iowa this day. There was one confirmed in eastern Nebraska, and another one in southwest Wisconsin.
