9/30/2007

This is our latest chase day to date.  It's not every season that you get Fall chase opportunities, but September 30, 2007 was one of those days.

We targeted northwest Iowa this day.  As we approached Lake City Iowa we could see a band of towering cumulus growing to the west.  These clouds formed an arch which went northwest into far northwest Iowa.

We watched the growing line of towers for quite awhile, and then decided to head north.  We ended up near the town of Sherwood Iowa when one of the storms decided to quickly get organized.  Soon there was a nice lowering on the southwest flank.  It was very far away, but the high contrast displayed it quite well from our location.  There were tornado reports in this area around this time, but since it was so far away we couldn't confirm anything.

Here is the radar around this time.  You can see the arc of storms extending to the northwest.  We were on the southern storm.

The storm quickly fell apart soon after.

We waited in the same spot as a new storm had fired on the southern end of the line and quickly passed to our west.  It had a small lowering on the south side of it, but it was very elevated, and showed absolutely no rotation.

The sun was setting on our chase day at this point, so we packed it up and made the long drive back through Iowa.  All in all it wasn't a bad chase considering it was almost October.  Anytime you can get out in the Fall and chase is a bonus in my book.
